Medication interactions can be dangerous and the First Prevention brown bag review will help stop any problems before they occur. Your nephrologist should periodically review with you all the medications you are taking. It is important that unit staff and the doctors have a current view of the medications you are taking for all things.

Medications that are safe for some people may not be safe for kidney failure patients and should be discontinued. Your nephrologist is an expert at this and will advise you on which medications could be harming you and you should not be taking. The review includes not only prescriptions but also drugs taken on an as needed basis (PRN); non-prescription medications (over the counter), herbacueticals, nutraceuticals, extra vitamins (e.g. herbs, St. John’s wort).

The Brown Bag Medication Review is done for your safety and convenience and also to help your doctors identify something unusual affecting you and prevent adverse reactions to medications so they can improve your care.
